Health Action started up in 1985 as an NGO focusing on health promotion. Since then we have become a Trust and extended our focus to provide both health promotion and mental health services. The Trust’s mission statement is “to work with communities to improve health and remove barriers that limit well-being”.

You can read more about our organisation in our 25th anniversary historical book: Duncan, R. (2013) Health Action Trust, 1985-2010 – 25 Years in Nelson Community Health.

Mary Ellis - CAYAD Manager, Health Action Trust , 03 548 2798  Email Mary

Mary writes: "I have worked for Health Action Trust for over 18 years, beginning part-time in 1994 as a Projects Manager. In 1997 I moved into the position of Support Manager for the White House Inc, which was one of the first Mental Health peer led day programmes in New Zealand. I stayed in this role for 15 years, taking over the position of Health Action’s Manager in January 2012.

Over this time, as well as my Support Management, I have been part of Health Action’s Project Management team securing further Mental Health Peer Led projects in Consumer Advocacy & Peer Support, a Peer led Pre-Crisis Intervention Service (4 bed residential) and the establishment of the Nelson Street Ambassador Service (night-time outreach youth work).

I am passionate about our Community Health Promotion services and see that CAYAD, through Community Action approaches, supports this community to address drug-related issues and reduce drug-related harm."
